The Big Life

biglife4THE BIG LIFE is a wonderfully upbeat musical set in London during the late 1950s, amongst a group of people newly arrived from the West Indies.

It is about how ambitions and aspirations can sometimes get in the way of the more important things in life – such as love. THE BIG LIFE is full of infectiously lively new Ska songs (played by a live band on stage) as well as comedy, romance and a superb cast.

Jason as well as choreographing the show appeared as the mischievous Admiral/Eros

The show is written by Paul Sirett with music by Paul Joseph.

After two sellout runs at the Theatre Royal Stratford East the show transferred to London’s West End, to great critical acclaim at the Apollo Shaftesbury Avenue.

“It is an astonishing night and in what is proving to be a golden period for new British musicals, The Big Life can happily stand comparison with Billy Elliott and Mary Poppins….Jason Pennycooke’s choreography is blessed with a delightful wit and fizz (he performs some particularly dazzling numbers himself). ” – Charles Spencer Daily Telegraph

“It’s been a year’s wait for East London hit The Big Life to make it into the West End but…there’s no pleasure so sweet as a deferred pleasure. Clint Dyer’s production is instantly winning. Paul Joseph’s ska-styled tunes are irrepressible too and well matched by Pennycooke’s characterful choreography.” – Brian Logan The Guardian.

“The show has been acclaimed for the high energy of its singer-dancers, the exuberance of Jason Pennycooke’s choreography, thrilling moments in Clint Dyer’s direction and these acclaimations are just and proper.” Jeremy Kingston The Times.

“Aboard the good ship Windrush, this black ska musical – which has wowed audiences at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, now sails jubilantly into Shaftesbury Ave and the history books. The show has a wonderfully bounding and buoyant spirit. The singing and dancing is delivered with terrific attack and the kind of contagiousjoy that will have the aisle jumping. A delight.” – Paul Taylor The Independent.
